Christian Outdoor Leader Training

Each summer (from October to April) Sonshine Ranch runs two courses teaching young adults the basics of running outdoor adventure programs mixed with Bible teaching and life skills. This course lasts for ten weeks and is open to all nationalities.

During the ten weeks participants will learn how to use some of the various activities run at Sonshine Ranch. After appropriate training, selected participants will get the opportunity to work with New Zealand school children in the camps which we run. At other times course members will be working with Sonshine Ranch staff doing the practical work of running a children’s outdoor recreation centre.

The other aspect of the COLT course is Bible teaching and discipleship. Course members will read the book, “The Purpose Driven Life” and participate in daily discussion groups. The course will also cover other subjects including, giving a testimony in public, how to lead a child to Christ, and how to run a bible devotion time for children.

The course will also take time out to explore parts of New Zealand together. These expeditions will change dependant on weather and which instructors are available. Past courses have been on a 3 day canoe expedition down the Wanganui River, a sea kayak trip on the Auckland harbour, tramping over Mount Tongariro, and a tour of the Coromandel Peninsular.

COLT graduates often stay on to work in the school holiday camps and to minister to the many young lives that come through the Ranch. Some are able to be placed at other Christian camps around New Zealand. Others use Sonshine Ranch as a base for further travels in New Zealand.
